Three Moments in Time (Fashion Industry Assignment)

My first assignment for Fashion Industry module is 'Three Moments in Time'. During this assignment I must research into a garment, pick three moments in time before 1900 and finally create three articles which are suitable for three current publications. I have used InDesign to create three article from seperate publications. The first is from Elle and contains information about waistcoats from the 17th century (article 1)
The second is from Grazia and features details of 18th century waistcoats (article 2)
The third is in the style of Wonderland and concentrates on Russel Brand and the Dandyism movement (article 3)

'Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballet Russe' at the V&A

I went to the 'Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballet Russe' exhibition at the Victoria and Albert whist in London. It was really interesting to see how the Ballet Russe had an affect on music, design, art and choreography and the collaborations with amazing artists including Pablo Picasso, Matisse and Coco Chanel.

I used the info from the exhibition to create a feature article for my Fashin reading and Writing module. (Feature Aticle)

Christmas on Oxford Street

Heroes and Heroines Exhibition

I recently visited the Heroes and Heroines exhibition at the Leeds City Museum in Millennium Square. I was really surprised at the amount of stunning and iconic costume collections on display and the information throughout the exhibition has been useful for many modules of my Fashion Communication course. I initially visited the exhibition for my Fashion Reading and Writing module and created a news story which I had to edit down to 300 words (Link to my news story)

New tricks...Not so easy!!

The first part of my assessment was to exactly recreate a chosen magazine article.
I used Photoshop and Indesign to create this however, it was much more difficult than I had expected. I found it quite difficult getting the correct font used in the article; I found a website called http://www.whatthefont.com/ which allows you to upload an example and then they find the nearest match in their database. This was helpful but unless you have to purchase the font to use it therefore I had to use the closest font that was available on Indesign. Here is how I got on...(exact article)

The second part of the assessment was to individualise the article. I chose to focus on a recurring theme in the article which was the idea of taking risks, pushing the boundaries and juxtaposing new, fresh ideas with old, reputable values. I did this by using a lot of negative effects, I thought this would be a good portrayal of the juxtaposition and how Marc Jacobs risked a negative outcome to establish and create something 'new and young.' My final individualised article is presented here...(individual article)

Customized Louis Vuitton tattoos by Scott Campbell

I saw the S/S 2011 Louis Vuitton menswear collection and it instantly reminded me of the work I have been doing on the Louis Vuitton article in Love magazine. The models were tattooed as part of a collaboration between Louis Vuitton's Creative Director, Marc Jacobs and New York based tattoo artist Scott Campbell who also customised a number of leather bags. These images are like those in the article where the mannequins have the LV monogram printed all over them; for me this highlights how Jacobs is constantly taking risks and pushing the boundaries whilst keeping the key values and heritage of the brand. I love it!!!!!

Young girl...new tricks

I've recently been learning how to use Photoshop and In Design...my first project is to work on a magazine article using these programmes to create 2 articles...
  • Representative: reproduced exactly, accurately and identically
  • Individualised: re-structured, re-styled and re-presented
So...ive started with an article from Love magazine which celebrates the 13th anniversary of the Louis Vuitton ready-to wear-collection. Both text and photos are really interesting and inspiring...take a look at the article and my progress so far...(Article annotoations)

Fashion Feed

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Trick-or-Treat for Unicef scheme, Feed have created a limited edition Halloween bag which when purchased from HSN will go to Unicef to help children at the risk of malnutrition. I think the idea of combining charities with fashion is such an amazing idea because it can appeal to such a wide audience.

Comme de Garcon S/S 2011

The odd blazers with one side longer than the other, the bold black and white pallete, the collage of garments to create one piece....I really love Comme de Garcon's spring/summer 2011 collection. I really like the touch of serialism Rei Kawakubo added to convey her reference point: split personalities. At the end, the models came down two by two, sewn together like a mirror image...the eery image of the pairs remind me of the twins from The Shining.

"Coco Before Chanel" - Official Trailer [HQ HD]

Quite embarrassingly, last week was the first time I had seen the film Coco avant Chanel. I love the strong, independant image of Coco that is portrayed and the way she celebrates the female form; questioning and challenging the customary. It was interesting to see how society at the time was such a huge factor and highlighted Coco's refusal to conform. And of course...the beautiful clothes!!!
